I'm obsessed with design blogs, mags, and books. It seriously is like an addiction now, and yet, can't seem to keep up with design in my own home. I so want to - SO VERY BADLY. For a while there I was feeling extremely guilty for my mess of a house. Although Danny thinks our place is fine - I mean, sure it's not Hoardersville but it could really use a good scrub, an everything-has-a-place organization plan, and a style scheme per room. I'm not gonna lie, part of my postpartum depression grew from this guilt. Then I stumbled across this article by blogger Kristen Howerton. These two photos in particular really spoke to me:
Above is her master bedroom once a month and below is her room every other day. She instantly became my new favorite person. I love how both photos were probably taken with her phone and that each room - even the more organized one - feels so real and cozy. I can relate and I really appreciate her candor. For a new mama with PPD, my spirits were lifted (ok, the Zoloft probably had an affect too).
Decorating/organizing takes time. AND keeping up with that isn't always like the peeps from the various blogs I devour daily would like me to believe. Not that there's anything wrong with that but I appreciate a little truth here and there. Still, I do strive to be a bit more organized, a bit more style savvy, and a bit more active. So in an effort to cross off things on my to-do wishlist, I'm going to actively clean up, organize, and decorate Han's closet by this weekend. I even have Danny on board or well, I will (love you, Dannybunnies!).
Here are some ideas I'm kicking around thanks to the ever growing blog world and Pinterest universe.
I like that there's shelving inside the closet with bins. The hanging organizers in the middle are something to consider as well. Ooh and the lighting! I'm feelin' that feature.
I love that this closet is sans doors, painted inside with cute gold dot embellishments, and multiple hanging bar heights. Also, how cute are those gray and white bins?!
DING! DING! DING! We have a winner, folks! This awesome closet is a similar size to Han's and we have the IKEA Expedit (now Kallax) shelf unit that will easily fit into his closet. I love that it's painted a color and not just your standard white. It's also multi-purpose. Meaning, it stores clothes (green bins & and hanging rod), toys (on shelf and in gray and white bins {there they are again!}), and books. Because Han shares a room with our office junk it's important that his stuff has a home and doesn't take up the little space we have in that room. Here's a numbered break down on how I envision Han's closet:
- Upper shelf area = keep storage bins here similar to the green ones in the winning closet's upper shelf area. That blogger actually stores her kid's bigger clothes that he doesn't quite fit in yet. I LOVE that idea! I didn't number them, but those plastic bins in the right corner are 12-18 month. Clearly I need a designated place for them other than in unsightly stacks on the floor. She got her bins from Target, but I figure we'd use the cheap, pale green ones we have from IKEA (see #3). All the crap up there now needs a weeding and then put in either the hall closet, Danny's closet, or my closet.
- Middle closet area = I love the idea of painting the inside of the closet. Right now it's the white the whole house used to be painted in until Danny and I had a massive painting party. We could either paint it the same color as Han's walls, but I kind of like the idea of painting it a different color. Maybe the same bold blue the whole room used to be? It would go nicely with the fabric we picked out (samples are hanging in front of upper shelf area) to make closet curtains. Bringing back the closet rod/bar thing isn't a bad idea either. In Two Twenty One's son's closet she organized by size (with DIY dividers) and even coordinated outfits by clipping pants onto hangers with clothespins! Genius. I strangely have a ton of clothespins.
- Expedit shelving unit = turn it horizontally and stuff it into the closet! I'd do the same thing as she did with storing toys in bins on bottom cubbies (<-- ain't that the cutest word!). I'm torn on whether I want to uniformly use bins like hers (from Land of Nod and come in different colors!) or mix it up with boxes from 3 Sprouts (I'm partial to the unicorn and dragon ones)? The Land of Nod ones are cheaper, so there's that. And Han could use them well into teenage-hood (Whoa! That seems like forever away, haha), so there's that as well...hmm. I do love the yellow and blue bins. Guess Danny will have to be the deciding factor.
- Bottom closet area = obviously this is where the shelving unit will go, but I wanted to point out that a lot of the stuff is actually Danny's music equipment that will be stored elsewhere. Also, in going back to the bottom storage bins that will live there I like how a friend of mine organizes her son's toys by texture and type. I think I'll go with that organizational tip as well. I like the idea of showing Han how to put things away and how each item has its own place. Perhaps he'll be a better organizer than his parents when he grows up?
